Please see attached model where I have specified few elements without material to avoid any strength and weight contribution from them. Staad for some reason does not analyse and errs that ELASTIC MODULUS to be assigned. Is there a way around this issue. I can also specify 'DUMMY_' property to these sections to avoid any weight contribution but still does not work. I have a similar variation model with material -less elements specified and that does run fine.

RAM Frame - Node Displacement for a Load Case
Hi- When you ask RAM Frame to output 'displacments at a node' for all load cases, please confirm the displacements are for the full load of each load case. Therefore, the wind load displacement at that node is larger than the actual wind load displacement given that wind loads are a factored load. That same applies for seismic loads.

Pilaster Columns in a Plate Element Retaining Wall
What is the proper way to model pilaster columns that are part of a foundation retaining wall? Right now, I have the 2D beam elements connected in-line with the plate element wall. I made the plate elements that are within the 'column region' have zero mass, but kept their other properties so they would transfer moments and shear. I am worried this might be the wrong approach? Any insights would be appreciated.

BIM Workflows: Aecosim STAAD Partition Loads
We are looking at the possibility of changing the wall build-ups on a job, and I am somewhat surprised how much manual data re-entry is required.
Q: If there are walls modeled in Aecosim (which have the material info attached), can STAAD automatically calculate the dead load for the walls (which have volume info because they are solids) and position them on the slab (FE element?) as loads? I assume that this will need ISM / Structural Synchronizer.
The same should apply for MEP equipment generated in Aecosim. I think AutoPipe already does this for pipe weights and expansion etc?
BIM deliverables are getting more and more detailed, requiring a lot of material properties to be attached to each element in the 3d model. For example, the same wall elements modeled by the architects in Aecosim Building Designer will have conductivity and permeability properties that will drive calculations in Aecosim Energy Simulator which will influence the MEP design. There seems to some tools in ABD/AES that allow this information to be synch'd. I am wondering if there isn't a similar function that links ABD and STAAD.
Would OpenSTAAD macros be needed?

BIM Workflows: Slab Deflections over Partition Lines
We have been asked to review the wall build-ups on a job, and the contractor would like to minimise the thickness of the deflection head / firestopping on top of the partition walls.
Not a request I have come across before, but I suppose in these BIM-crazy days, everyone expects that the information is already in the model and can be extracted fairly painlessly.
Q: Is there a way to extract the slab deflections along a user defined line in STAAD? Seems like most structural packages these days can generate a 'heat map' of the slab deflections. I suppose it would just be a question of extracting the deflection values that intersect the wall line in plan, and label them at their corresponding positions along the line, at a specified interval. The largest deflection would be in bold or colour-coded.
The next step would be to automatically extract the wall positions generated say in Aecosim Building Designer, convert them into lines for extracting the deflection info, as described above.
Not sure what the future plans are for STAAD's Physical Modeler or ISM. but this info would be great to have back in ABD in a format that can be referenced.
Does OpenSTAAD macros understand Aecosim's DataGroup System or Mstn CE's Items?
Lots of engineers have 'digital transformation' programmes internally, I suppose we will see a lot more 'hackathon' type requests of the structural engineers by the contractors.

Cut by a plane- RC Bridge Deck
Hi,
I am having an issue using the cut by a plane function in post-processing.
I have followed the manual on cutting plane that I desire (8.25 in x). However, the nodal positions outputted seem to be completely random?
Apologies if this is straightforward, I am new to Staad. Ultimately, I am aiming to find the shear forces within the plates at mid-span to output to an RC slab design.

BIM Workflows: STAAD Aecosim
Interesting write-up on converting between BIM modeling and structural analysis apps.
Amazing to hear that section properties from Revit transfer better compared to Aecosim; rotated beams can't be modeled in Aecosim (p120); loads, load cases and load combinations could only transfer for concrete beams? (p121)
The overall impression is that Revit<>RSA will provide a much better interop experience. This is a bit of a shame given Bentley's large family of apps, which is being sold as providing a 'Common Modeling Environment'.
Aecosim <> STAAD should be silky smooth.
