I have a question regarding the reinforcement steel sizing in STAAD Foundations Advanced. When there is a relatively small moment in the foundation and therefore the minimum reinforcement for shrinkage controls the design, is there a way to get STAAD Foundation Advanced to spread this required area of steel across both the top and bottom of the mat? It seems in my model that the program is calculating the correct area required based on the ACI guideline for shrinkage reinforcement but instead of dividing this area among the top and bottom it seems to be saying that the calculated area is required at both the top and bottom. According to my own hand calculations the minimum area of steel has the capacity to handle the maximum moments so I do not see why the program is over designing the mat reinforcement.
