I have picked up two issues that I would like you to clarify / comment on please :
When doing a design check on a Class 4 angle strut ( in compression ) the program will give a fail message and will show a “zero” compression capacity.
This is in conflict with the actual case :
a) Class 4 Angles in compression : ( see attaches STAAD files and pdf prints of results )
Exsample : a L50x50x3 1.0 meter long angle with fy =350 MPa has a compression resistance of 37.9 kN
When doing a simple design check STAADPRO will fail the member.
b) Reduced moment capacity of I-beams due to compression flange slenderness is not calculated and full moment capacity is assumed in design check.
I beam 7m long 254x31kg with a UDL of 20kN/m is modelled. The actual moment is then 122.5kN and the moment capacity of the beam is shown as 126.2 kNm
The design check shows that the beam will be safe with a 0.971 ratio
The actual moment capacity of this beam with a 7m effective span is 37.2kNm – thus the beam will fail - it is far less than what STAADPRO is showing – this is a dangerous situation
Can you please urgently inform me if there is a problem with my software ( using SANS 10162 )
Your urgent reply is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
